Specifying next-generation MVHR: The Versatile Zehnder Comfo Q range

Designing high-performance ventilation systems for modern, airtight buildings requires balancing optimal indoor air quality with strict energy-efficiency targets.

The Versatile Zehnder Comfo Q series delivers an intelligent MVHR solution engineered to reduce carbon emissions while maintaining acoustic comfort and superior heat recovery.

Core MVHR units

  • Zehnder Comfo Q350: Delivering up to 350 mÑ/h airflow, this compact MVHR unit is optimised for medium-sized residential builds and high-density apartment projects.
  • Zehnder Comfo Q450: Designed for larger residential dwellings, the Q450 provides an increased capacity of 450 mÑ/h with whisper-quiet operational acoustics. • Zehnder Comfo Q600: Built for high-duty demands up to 600 mÑ/h, the Q600 easily handles large one-off houses, multifamily developments, or light commercial spaces.

Add-on modules & enhancements

  • Zehnder ComfoClime: Operating alongside the Comfo Q600 or Q450, this air-temperature module uses inverter heat-pump technology to temper supply air, mitigating summer overheating and reducing humidity.
  • Zehnder ComfoFond-L Eco: This sub-soil earth-brine heat exchanger leverages constant 8–12ÆC ground temperatures to naturally pre-heat or pre-cool incoming air prior to MVHR intake.
  • Zehnder Enthalpy Exchanger: Designed for moisture balance, this recovers both sensible heat and latent moisture from wet rooms to prevent indoor air from drying out during winter heating months.

From single-dwelling specifications to large-scale residential developments, Versatile provides full technical guidance and official manufacturer-backed support across the entire Zehnder ecosystem.

CIBSE TM59: Mitigating overheating in homes

CIBSE TM59 is the industry-standard methodology for assessing overheating risk in UK and Irish homes (houses, apartments, student accommodation and care homes). Driven by rising global temperatures and increasingly airtight, well-insulated modern building designs, TM59 provides dynamic thermal simulation guidelines to ensure homes remain safe and comfortable year-round. It uses dynamic thermal modelling to evaluate overheating risk under realistic occupancy scenarios.

The framework tests two key scenarios:

  • Naturally ventilated homes (evaluating exceedance of adaptive thermal comfort thresholds), and
  • Mechanically ventilated homes (setting a strict maximum limit of 26°C for occupied spaces).

By identifying thermal risks during the design stage, CIBSE TM59 helps architects and engineers implement effective shading, optimised ventilation, and passive cooling strategies before construction begins.

Versatile has a range of energy-efficient ventilation solutions that can help support the mitigation of overheating in homes on your new or existing building project.
