In the complex world of building services, the distance between a digital twin and a construction site can sometimes feel vast. To bridge this gap, CIBSE Ireland is inviting engineering firms and consultants to participate in the Workshare Exchange Programme—a unique initiative designed to foster cross-industry empathy, technical excellence, and seamless project delivery.

The programme offers a structured exchange where staff members from design consultancies and contracting companies swap workplaces. By stepping out of their usual environments, participants gain a first-hand look at the challenges, workflows, and perspectives of their industry counterparts.

Why your firm should participate in the CIBSE Ireland Workshare Exchange Programme

The CIBE Ireland Workshare Exchange is specifically tailored for engineers with two to five years of experience—a pivotal stage where professional habits and technical foundations are formed.

Broadened Perspectives: Consultants see how their designs are implemented on-site, while contractors gain insight into the intricacies of the design and compliance process.

Enhanced Communication: Understanding the “why” behind the other team’s decisions makes communication more efficient, reducing friction on live projects.

Professional Development: Participants return to their home firms with a more holistic understanding of the building services lifecycle, making them more versatile and effective engineers.

Laura McMahon, Chair, CIBSE Ireland, says the Workshare Exchange isn’t just about technical skills; it’s about building the empathy and practical insight that transform a good engineer into a great collaborator.

Laura comments, “By seeing the project through a partner’s eyes, we don’t just solve problems—we prevent them. This programme is essential for developing the next generation of industry leaders who understand that excellence requires both design precision and practical reality.”

How CIBSE Ireland Workshare Exchange works

Re-introduced in 2023 with continued success through last year, the programme is built on a framework of mentorship and practical immersion.

The Structure

Typically, staff are exchanged between a consultancy and a contractor, often working on a common project, ensuring the experience is relevant and immediately applicable.

Duration

The exchange generally lasts for a few months, providing enough time for deep immersion without long-term disruption to firm operations.

Mentorship

To ensure maximum value, every participant is assigned a mentor at the host company to guide their learning and integration.

Proven Success

Leading industry names, such as Ethos Engineering and Designer Group, have already participated, reaping the benefits of more collaborative, technically-savvy teams.

Join the Exchange

CIBSE Ireland believes that while core engineering knowledge is a shared language, the practical application from both design and installation perspectives is where true innovation happens. CIBSE Ireland invites all forward-thinking firms to sign up to the 2026 programme and invest in the future of their engineers and the efficiency of our industry.
